Leasing Art
Leasing art has become a very exciting way for businesses and individuals to put quality fine art on their walls and in their spaces. Leasing isn't for everyone, but it works very well in certain situations and for certain individuals. Consider these reasons for leasing art.
- Leasing allows businesses and individuals to display fine art at a very modest cost.
- Leasing allows businesses to refresh critical spaces, such as reception areas, lobbies, conference rooms, and offices, with new art every few months. Both clients and employees find this very uplifting and rewarding.
- Leasing gives businesses and individuals the opportunity to learn more about local artists while supporting their work and the community.
- Leasing allows businesses and individuals to slowly and carefully build an art collection by "living with" a piece of art for a while before purchasing it.
- For businesses, the costs associated with leasing art can be taken as tax deductions.
Interested in leasing? Here is how it works...
- Art is generally leased for a period of four months, which constitutes one leasing cycle. At the end of a cycle, the lessee has the option of renewing the lease agreement for another cycle or having the art removed. For special situations or events, art may be leased for shorter lengths of time, but different rates apply. An individual artist may set a limit to the length of time any individual piece may be leased.
- The leasing fee is 3% of the sales price of a piece of art per month. (Please see Leasing Fee Schedule for examples.)
- Installation is carried out or overseen on site by the Gallery. Lessees pay an installation fee of $75, which is the base fee for lessees within 60 miles of Brunswick, Maine who are hanging fewer than ten pieces. The fee will be adjusted for farther distances and larger projects.
- Lessees are expected to pay the installation fee and the leasing fee for the entire cycle prior to installation. For a two percent (2%) charge, lessees may pay the leasing fee in two equal payments: one prior to installation and the other halfway through the cycle.
- Six weeks before the end of a leasing cycle the lessee is reminded of the option to purchase artwork being leased . If the lessee chooses to make a purchase, 100% of the leasing fee paid for the first lease cycle for a particular piece will be deducted from the purchase price of that piece; fifty percent (50%) of the leasing fee paid for the second leasing cycle will be deducted from the purchase price; none of the leasing fee paid for additional leasing cycles may be deducted from the purchase price.
- Once in the possession of the lessee, all art must be covered for damage and theft by the lessee’s insurance policy, a copy of which must be given to the Gallery as proof of coverage before installation.
- Lessees may take advantage of up to two free consultation visits to help select art and make decisions about installation. Additional consultation will be charged at the Gallery's usual rate.
